Seahawks edged at home despite double-doubles

Jordon Harris had the look. He just couldn’t make the shot.

Lamar State College-Port Arthur’s Seahawks fell 70-68 to Southern University-Shreveport at the Carl Parker Center on Saturday. Harris had a look at a three for the win as the buzzer sounded, but his shot hit the rim and fell into the waiting arms of Shreveport’s Stanimir Fivulj.

The Seahawks (10-7) were in a fight the entire game and trailed 32-31 at the break. LSC-PA fought back and eventually took a 62-52 lead with 7:28 left in the game after a three-pointer from Harris. He led the Seahawks with 18 points, 13 coming in the second half.

The Jaguars knocked down 5 of 6 from the free-throw line the rest of the way and Derion Porchie scored 13 of his 31 points in the game’s final 7:11.

Nederland graduate and LSC-PA sophomore Colton Weisbrod scored 16 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. He was visibly upset when the game winded down and again after the game.

“It all starts on the defensive end,” Weisbrod said. “We are a great offensive team. We had 31 points at the half and ended up with 68. We score the ball well, but it comes down to defense. We got up by 10 and they started to get a couple of easy baskets and getting to the basket pretty easily. We just have to take more pride in our defense.”

The Jaguars shot 37.3 percent from the field.  The Seahawks forced 12 turnovers.

LSC-PA was 24 of 66 from the field and turned the ball over just eight times.

The Seahawks did a good job getting back into the game after falling behind by nine in the first half, 23-14 with 11:04 left before half.

Porchie put the Jaguars up 32-29 with 30 seconds left in the first on a trey and LSC-PA post Christian Albright answered with a layup at the buzzer to get the Seahawks within 32-31 at the break.

Harris only shot five times in the first half and made only two baskets. He finished 7-of-18 shooting and was 4 of 11 from behind the arc.

“We missed some free throws and a lot of layups and shots in the paint,” LSC-PA coach Lance Madison said. “They [Jaguars] are a good team. They shot the ball well from the free throw line. I am not sure they missed a free throw.

“We had a long road trip coming back Wednesday night. That took a lot out of us. I knew it would be hard for us to regroup and come out with the intensity we needed tonight. Hopefully we will learn from this loss and play better basketball.”

The Seahawks added a player to its roster before the game. Ozen graduate Demasters Sam was on the court against the Jaguars. He was scheduled to play for the Seahawks this season but left the team right before the season. Sam was back to fill a roster left open by Petar Radojicic, who is out for the season with a back injury.

Sam finished 0 of 2 from the field and had a team-high four assists. He also grabbed two rebounds.
