Ford notches 18-11 before injury in win

There was 3:15 left in the game, and all of a sudden the Port Arthur Memorial gym went silent.
Senior Jakeira Ford went down with an apparent knee injury while jumping up for a loose ball. Ford immediately grabbed her knee and was soon helped off the court.
The Lady Titans held on for a 46-31 win over Baytown Sterling to improve to 4-1 in the District 21-6A standings and 14-8 overall.
Memorial coach Kevin Henry reported late Friday that Ford will have an MRI next week.
“Hopefully it is nothing major,” Henry said after his team’s win. “Hopefully it is a sprain. We will find out more over the weekend and tonight to see if it swells up. We will go from there.”
Ford scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds before the injury. She scored 10 points in the game’s first 8 minutes. Ford had 14 points in the paint.
The Lady Titans jumped out to a 15-9 after the first period. Memorial started the game on an 11-0 run.
Memorial then pushed the score to 23-14 at the break.
Channel Hamilton was 7 of 13 shooting and finished with 15 points. Victoria Brown added five points for Memorial while Kennedi Lofton put in four points.
Kala Wheeler had 11 points for the Lady Rangers (5-15, 0-4), while teammate Shayna Elder added nine points in the loss. Erin Kelly finished with eight rebounds.
Sterling outrebounded Memorial 44-40.
Sterling had an 11-0 run of its own in the third quarter to pull to within 31-23.
The Lady Rangers outscored the Lady Titans 11-8 in the period to trail 35-25 heading into the fourth.
Memorial answered with a 7-0 run to start the fourth period to push the lead to 42-25.
The Lady Titans hit the road Tuesday to face La Porte.
