LSC-PA ANNOUNCES CHEER TRYOUTS

Lamar State College-Port Arthur is bolstering Seahawks Spirit with a new team of dancers, tumblers and cheerleaders starting this semester at the school.

Tryouts for the Seahawks Spirit Team are taking place on Monday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. in the Carl Parker Center with new coach David Aguirre looking for the new face of Seahawks athletics. New team members will perform for the first time at the Jan. 20 home men’s basketball game against Lee College at the Parker Center. That game tips off at 7 p.m.

“I am looking for people with dance ability, voice projection and cheer and dance background,” he said. “We’re looking for both female and male team members. The men will help with lifting and sideline cheers.”

This squad will serve during the Spring 2016 semester with new tryouts taking place during the month of May for a squad that will perform for the 2016-17 school year.

Students must be enrolled full time at LSC-PA and hold at least a 2.0 grade point average to be considered for the team. Those selected for the squad qualify for a scholarship equivalent to a three-hour class at the college.

HYMAN RESIGNS AS TEXAS A&M’s AD

COLLEGE STATION (AP) — Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman is stepping down after four years on the job.

University President Michael Young announced the move Tuesday.

Hyman was hired as athletic director in 2012 and helped the Aggies’ transition from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference. He was also AD at VMI, Miami (Ohio), TCU and South Carolina.

Young credited him with helping Texas A&M athletes improve both on the field and in the classroom. Hyman will stay on until his replacement is hired.

FORMER AGGIES QB JOINS COUGARS

HOUSTON (AP) — Former Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen is headed to Houston.

Cougars coach Tom Herman announced the transfer on Tuesday.

Allen spent two seasons with the Aggies, who have also seen quarterback Kyler Murray transfer and offensive coordinator Jake Spavital depart in recent weeks. Allen will sit out next year under NCAA transfer rules but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Allen started the first seven games this season before struggling with interceptions. Murray started the next three games, but Allen got his job back for the final two games.

With both quarterbacks gone, Jake Hubenak started as the Aggies lost the Music City Bowl 27-21 to Louisville.

EX-SOONER KNIGHT COMMITS TO AGGIES

(AP) — Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight announced on Twitter on Monday that he’ll be playing his senior season at Texas A&M.

Knight said he still hopes to call Norman, Oklahoma home, but is looking forward to making his senior season a memorable one.

“So as I embark on this next chapter of my life, I simply ask for prayer,” he wrote on the Twitter post. “So farewell for now Sooner Nation and BOOMER SOONER! And hello Aggieland, let’s have some fun! Gig’em!

COKER, UTSA’s FIRST FB COACH, STEPS DOWN

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Larry Coker, who built the Texas-San Antonio football program from scratch in 2009, is stepping down after five seasons.

The school announced the move Tuesday. Coker had a 26-32 record at UTSA, including 3-9 this past season.

Coker was considered a major hire for the fledgling program. He won a national title with Miami in 2001 but was fired there in 2006.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Three overtimes and 215 combined points. What more could one want from No. 1 vs. No. 2?

Top-ranked Kansas survived a 46-point attack by Buddy Hield but needed 15 extra minutes of basketball to beat second-ranked Oklahoma 109-106 in Allen Fieldhouse late Monday. The two teams moved up to their respective rankings after Michigan  State lost as a No. 1 team last week.

Perry Ellis of Kansas and Jordan Woodard of Oklahoma each scord 27 points.

COLTS GIVE PAGANO 4-YEAR DEAL

INDIANAPOLIS — Ending much speculation over whether Chuck Pagano would be retained as Indianapolis’ head coach, the Colts announced late Monday a four-year extension to keep him at the helm.

Pagano led the Colts to three playoff victories and avoided a losing season in four seasons.
