A person of interest in a recent homicide was located about 200 miles away in the city of Teague, Texas.
Eric McWilliams, 32, a transient, was named as a person of interest in the Dec. 18 murder of Michael Reed, 29. The victim was found dead in his home in 1700 block of 10th Street. Port Arthur Police Maj. Raymond Clark said Reed’s injuries were consistent with being attacked.
McWilliams was picked up by police in Teague and is being held on a mental health warrant.
“Officers went to Teague and spoke with the person of interest who is being held in a mental health facility,” Clark said. “Officers retained evidence from the person of interest to be analyzed.”
McWilliams is believed to suffer from schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder.
The person of interest remains in the facility in Teague for mental health reasons and at this time police don’t have enough evidence at this time for probable cause to bring the man back to the city.
“Evidence retrieved will be sent for analysis as soon as possible to eliminate or confirm McWilliam’s involvement,” he said.
Investigators will continue to interview family, friends and neighbors in an attempt to determine the circumstances surrounding Reed’s death, according to a press release from PAPD.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call PAPD at 983-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS.
