Sherman Guillory

Sherman Guillory, 88, of Port Acres, passed away at home on Monday, October 12, 2015, after a long illness.  He was born on May 5, 1927 in Ville Platte, La., to Delin Guillory and Anna Reed Guillory.
He served in the Navy during WW II. After an honorable discharge, he worked as a merchant marine.  A few years later, he joined Texaco Mariner Department.  With much encouragement from his co-workers, he studied and obtained his 3rd Mate License, then raised it to 2nd Mate several years later. He retired after 38 years, sailing mostly on the Texaco Florida and Mississippi.
Along the way, he married the love of his life, Margaret Lee Stokes.  She was his helpmate and partner for 63 years.  She encouraged him, helped him study and managed their home while he was away at sea.  She also took wonderful care of him throughout his lengthy illness.
Sherman was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bertha Manuel; brothers, John Guillory and Charles Kelly; son-in-law, James McGougan, Sr.; and grandchildren, Mae and James McGougan, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Margie; daughters, Shirley McCollough and her husband, Phillip, of Vidor and Faye McCracken and her husband, Pat, of Lovington, New Mexico; and inherited daughter, Mary Ann Davis and her husband, Buddy, of Summit, Mississippi,; grandchildren, Mary Lynne Kinchen, Carol McGougan, Charlie McGougan and his wife, Sharon; great-grandchildren, Amanda Middlebrook, Geoffrey Kinchen, Travis and Trevor McGougan, Shae Lynn and Shaeffer Suttle; nephew, Dale Guillory; as well as many cousins and friends.
A gathering of Mr. Guillory’s family and friends will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2015, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 18, 2015, at Broussard’s, with interment to follow at Oak Bluff Cemetery, Port Neches.
