A senior citizen was likely suffering from a medical emergency when his truck left the roadway and crashed into the marsh near the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday.
Port Arthur Police Sgt. Scott Gaspard said the 66-year-old Orange County man, whose name has not been released, was treated and released from Christus Hospital-St. Mary for non-lifethreatening injuries on June 1.
According to police on scene, the man was traveling down the bridge towards Port Arthur when he left the roadway near an intersection, ran into an electrical guy wire and became airborne. The vehicle flipped several times before coming to rest near a tidal ditch between Texas 87 and Texas 73.
Emergency personnel with the Port Arthur Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance were forced to wade across the tidal ditch and thick mud in order to place the victim on a backboard before transporting him back across the water.
