A person driving in the wrong direction on a busy stretch of highway was killed when the vehicle was truck head-on by a tractor trailer on Thursday.

Port Arthur Police Department responded to the major traffic accident about 2:22 p.m. April 12 in the 1900 block of Texas 73. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the small van involved in the accident had been traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of traffic on the Texas 73 to Texas 82 access ramp, according to a press release from PAPD. The van was truck head-on by the big rig, which was traveling in the correct direction.

The driver of the van sustained fatal injuries during the collision. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The accident is under investigation by PAPD’s Advanced Accident investigators.
