Nederland gets top seed in District 20-4A

After the emotion of the final games of the regular season on Tuesday, Wednesday became about sorting out the rest.
On the boys end, a couple of ties were decided. At the top of District 20-4A, Nederland and Beaumont Central ended the season tied at 12-2. Nederland head coach Brian English wanted to play a tiebreaker game with the Jaguars, but Central instead ceded the No. 1 seed to the Bulldogs.
That means Nederland will play 19-4A’s fourth-place finisher Dayton on Tueday at a site and time to be determined. Central will play third-place finisher C.E. King on Tuesday.
Getting the top seed from 20-4A was no small concession, since Dayton finished four games behind the third-place finisher from 19-4A and should provide a more favorable matchup for Nederland.
The Port Arthur Memorial boys also finished tied in 21-5A with Channelview for second place. Both teams had identical 7-3 records in district play and agreed to play a tiebreaker game on Friday in Barbers Hill, with the time yet to be decided.
The two schools split their two meetings in district play, with Channelview winning 64-53 in the first matchup in Channelview. Memorial won the second 46-41 in overtime at home.
The race for the final spot in 21-3A also came into focus a little better. Both Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson had clinched playoff spots, but Orangefield, West Orange-Stark and Hamshire-Fannett tied for the third and final playoff spot.
In the three-team playoff, Hamshire-Fannett will receive the bye and play the winner of WO-S and Orangefield, who will square off on Friday at the PN-G Competition Gym. The second game will be played on Saturday at a site to be determined.
The Port Arthur Memorial girls are still trying to decide the time and location for their area round matchup with No. 11 Clear Springs, but should have a decision by early Thursday morning.
Orangefield’s girls set their area matchup with Giddings, which will be played at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Sam Houston State in Huntsville.
Other area playoff matchups include Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Crosby playing in the Class 4A bidistrict round Tuesday at East Chambers and Beaumont Ozen playing Houston North Forest in the bidistrict round on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined. — David Coleman
