Mary Elizabeth Andres Young, beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at the age of 91. Mary was born on February 28, 1920, on a small rural farm just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio, as the only child of John and Adelaide Andres. Upon graduation from high school she continued her education by enrolling in the University of Cincinnati and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in April of 1942. She joined Procter and Gamble Corporation and worked in a number of assignments in Cincinnati and New Orleans. In 1950, she made what was then a pioneering decision as a single young woman to attend graduate school, and later that year she enrolled in the MBA program at The University of Texas. While attending UT she met and later married a young man from Port Arthur, Texas, who was also doing graduate work, Glenn Robert Young. Mary and Glenn were married for almost 50 years before his passing in 2002. They both completed their MBA requirements in 1952 and moved to Port Arthur to begin their careers and start a family. With the exception of a two year assignment in Abadan, Iran, Mary and Glenn lived and worked in Port Arthur raising their family and actively participating in the local community. She had no interest in moving back to her native Ohio with the memories of shoveling snow in the winter months. In her spare time she loved to invest in the stock market, raise orchids, and, upon retirement, square and round dance.
She is survived by her children Joseph Glenn Young, Christopher Alan Young, Vicki Young Harvey and Jeffrey Todd Young; children in law Elizabeth Maddox Young, Robert W Harvey and Elisabeth Maria Young; and grandchildren Matthew Glenn Young, Stephen Joseph Young, Patrick Robert Young, Megan Deeann Young, Michael Andrew Harvey, Thomas Edward Harvey, Mary Elizabeth Harvey, Aaron Glenn Young and Alexander Josef Young.
A visitation celebrating Mary’s life, family and friendships will be held at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas, on Friday evening December 2nd from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday December 3rd at Immaculate Conception Church in Groves at 12:00 noon, and entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Groves. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Houston Area Parkinson Society.
