AUSTIN — Port Neches-Groves more than held its own at Onion Creek Country Club Monday in the 4A Fall State Preview Tournament Monday for boys golf teams expected to compete for the state championship next spring.
Paced by senior Jarrod Brown and sophomore Braden Bailey, who tied for sixth in individual competition with 36-hole scores of four-over-par 144, the Indians lead at the 18-hole mark and wound up tied for second with Cedar Park with a team total of 594.
Dallas Highland Park, the runner-up to Austin Lake Travis in last year’s 4A state tourney, rode a sizzling 64 from Jake Potter in the afternoon 18 to the championship in the 12-team field. Highland Park, which had trailed PN-G by five shots after the morning round, shot 283 in the afternoon to finish at 585 and win by nine.
The Indians shot 297-297 for their 594. Bailey fired rounds of 71-73, while Brown reversed that with 73-71. PN-G also got 153s (76-77) from Tyler Rawson and Lonnie Labove (77-76). No. 5 man Brandon Soileau carded rounds of 80-85 for 165.
Brandon Provost, playing in medalist competition, shot 161 on rounds of 84-77.
Zander Lozano from Boerne Champion won the individual title with a one-under score of 139 (69-70). Potter, who went 77-64, was second at 141. Mitchell Meissner of Alamo Heights and Charles Kim of Cedar Park both shot 73-69 to tie for third at 141. Cooper Dossey of Austin Vandergrist was fifth at 143.
“This was great experience for us,” said PN-G coach Ricky Keyes. “Our kids played really well and were in it all the way. This should really help us when we come back to play for the state championship.” — BOB WEST
