Cardinals finish off Longhorns, 17-4

PASADENA — Wasting no time in eliminating Tarkington Friday night, the Bridge City Cardinals swept the Longhorns by winning Game Two 17-4 in five innings in Pasadena.

The Cardinals (24-3-2) used a 14-run third inning to subdue the Longhorns (13-11).

Bridge City will face Sweeny in the 3A area playoff round next week.

Bryson McFarland got the win on the hill for the Cardinals as he went six innings, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking five.

The Cardinals scored three runs on just one hit off Tarkington starter Chance Evans in the bottom of the first inning.

Keaton Langston drew a leadoff walk and scored when Hunter Uzzle cranked a double down the leftfield line.

Chase Shugart followed with a walk and Ashton Hunter moved the runners over a base with a nice sacrifice bunt. Uzzle scored when Kyle Bergeron reached after a throwing error from short to first. Shugart made it 3-0 when he scored on a passed ball.

The Cardinals scored 14 runs in a variety of ways in the bottom of the third off Longhorn errors and big hits as they sent 19 batters to the plate.

Hunter got on in the leadoff spot after being plucked by a Evans pitch. Hunter promptly swiped second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild Evans pitch.

Sage Elmore slapped a one-out single to second. He swiped second and was able to dart home off a Tarkington throwing error.

Blake Pruett roped a single to center and Jonah Watts walked and Trevor Gunn had an infield single to load up the bases.

Langston came up big when he cranked a two-run single to left centerfield, Gunn eventually scored in all of the action off a throwing error to make it 8-0.

Uzzle made it 9-0 in a hurry when he blasted a Evans’ offering off the the right centerfield fence for a run-scoring triple. Uzzle scored again when a Chase Shugart grounder was mishandled.

Evans was lifted after allowing seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked four.

It didn’t get easier for Longhorn reliever Ashton Lott.

Lott walked Hunter and Bergeron and then hit Blaine Huff with a pitch with the bases loaded as Shugart trotted home.

Bryce Carey drew a bases-loaded walk as Hunter came in to score. Bergeron made it 13-0 when he scored on a walk to Gunn.

Lott was replaced by Chase Greenland on the Tarkington hill and Langston quickly greeted him with a two-run single to center. After Uzzle was hit by a pitch, Shugart delivered a RBI single to right.

Hunter upped it to 17-0 with a single to center to plate Langston.

Tarkington got all their runs in the fifth off four hits as the Cardinals strolled to the win.
