LITTLE CYPRESS —
Getting timely hits and getting several key defensive plays from shortstop Haley Mills, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears grabbed sole posession of second-place in District 20-4A by taking down the Nederland Lady Bulldogs 3-1 Friday night at Lady Bear Field.
The Lady Bears (21-6, 8-2) only picked up three hits against Nederland pitcher Madyson Guidry while the Lady Bulldogs (7-3 in district) managed just five hits against Lady Bear ace Hope Russell.
Guidry struck out eight Lady Bears and walked only one batter.
Mills had four crucial putouts to end Nederland threats.
“We didn’t get many hits but when we had baserunners, we found ways to put it in play and gets some runs on the board,” said Lady Bear coach Dena Adkins. “This was a big win for us that will hopefully help us down the road but we’ve still got some big games ahead of us.”
The Lady Bears went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second frame.
Russell drew a walk from Guidry and courtesy runner Alexie Hughes advanced to second on a passed ball. Blythe Ferguson then put down a bunt towards third and there was an errant throw to first as Hughes darted in to score.
LC-M snagged a 2-0 edge in the fifth.
Angel Villanueva roped a leadoff triple to the rightfield wall and Alisha Fuss scored her with a fielder’s choice RBI.
Nederland scratched in a run in the top of the sixth after a pair of LC-M errors.
Savana Guidry led off with a deep fly to rightfield. The ball was dropped and she scooted all the way to third base. With one out, Kelsey Beard reached on a throwing error at first as Guidry was able to score. With two outs, Lady Bulldog Hannah Smith singled to third but the Lady Bears got out of the inning when Lindsey Taylor grounded out to Mills at short.
In the top of the first, Tori Cooper singled to center and moved to to second on a Savana Guidry sac bunt and to third on a Nicole Matise fly out. She was stranded though, when Mills made another great play at short on a Beard grounder.
Matise had a one-out single in the fourth but Mills ended it when she caught a hard line drive issued by Taylor Davis.
In the fifth inning, the Lady Bulldogs got back-to-back one-out singles by Taylor and Brixxie Gallier but Cooper ended up grounding out to Mills at short as the senior shortstop made a nice scoop of the ball and threw a fastball to first to get out the swift Cooper.
“Haley Mills is an amazing shortstop,” said Adkins. “Nothing gets past her. She’s a true stopper out there. I’m so glad she’s on our team and not the other way around. She’s such a fierce competitor.”
The Lady Bears tacked on a run in the seventh when Taylor Fraacastoro doubled down the leftfield line and scored off a Russell RBI single to right.
