PORT ARTHUR —
By the time the Port Arthur Memorial Lady Titans let out a sigh against Channelview, Coach Kevin Henry’s voice was lost.
Henry and his Lady Titans defeated Channelview, 53-52, in one of the most thrilliing games of the season.
Joyce Kennerson’s free throw with 12.1 seconds left on the clock proved to be the difference after Channelview’s Taeler Deer tied the game at 52-52 with 18.4 left on the clock.
The Lady Falcons (11-3, 1-3) took possession of the ball under the basket with 5.7 remaining in the game yet a shot was blocked by Channel Hamilton. Channelview’s Marshell Hollins grabbed the rebound yet her final attempt at the win did not fall as her put-back came up short.
“Channelview certainly made it a game,” Henry said. “We tried to take Taeler out the game but they had other players really step up tonight. They made us work for the win tonight.”
The Lady Titans (13-3, 4-0) was up 37-24 midway through the third period before the Lady Falcons went on a 6-0 run and closed the gap to 39-32 going into the fourth.
Channelview got back-to-back 3-pointers from Natalie Moody and Deer to open the last frame to make the score 39-38 in favor of Memorial.
Kennnerson’s fourth steal of the game came with 1:20 on the clock and she followed up the great defensive play with a bucket to put the Lady Titans up 52-48 with 1:17 remaining in regulation.
Kennerson finished with 19 points and four rebounds. Kennerson scored 12 of her 19 points in the fourth period.
Jakeira Ford added 18 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks for the Lady Titans. Ford completed the double-double with 5:28 left in the third and had 10 points and six rebounds in the first period. Hamilton had seven points and three rebounds.
Channelview was paced by Deer’s 19 points and seven boards. Moody finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Jaycelyn Jefferson added 12 points.
Memorial jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first period as Kennerson and Ford combined for all of the Lady Titans points in the first eight minutes.
The Lady Titans will compete in the Barbers Hill Tournament Dec. 27-28 before making the trip to North Shore on Friday, Jan. 3.
