Coach Aimee Bates’ Port Neches-Groves girls are headed to the 4A state sectional soccer playoff round.
The Lady Indians eliminated Willis, 3-0, late Friday night after a two-hour-plus rain delay.
PN-G, tri-champions of District 38-4A, scored once in the first half and then got two-second half goals. Friday night’s second half did not start until 9:40 p.m., the match originally started at 6 p.m.
Junior Hannah Higgins got the scoring action going six minutes into the match with a left-footed shot to the far post off a pass from junior Alyssa Talbot.
Then the rains came and the Lady Indians headed to a nearby mall during the delay. The break in action did not phase these Lady Indians.
Junior Hannah Gerald scored to make it 2-0 in the second half off an assist from Higgins. Gerald’s shot found the net inside the far post.
Sophomore Mikayla Johnson finished off Willis’ season with an outside shot making it 3-0.
“We controlled the match,” Bates said. “We played excellent defense. It was a crazy night.”
PN-G moved on to face either Magnolia or Jasper next Thursday or Friday.
