PORT ARTHUR — Port Arthur Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating a wreck that occurred between two veteran police officers.

The incident occurred about 12:18 a.m. Oct. 23 in the 1700 block of T.B. Ellison Parkway on Pleasure Island. The veteran officers, identified as Officer Shawn Henry and Officer Douglas Klinkhammer, were investigating a report of shots fired. As the officers were leaving Officer Henry saw a group of fishermen and slowed down; when he did his vehicle was rear ended by the vehicle driven by Klinkhammer. Both officers were driving Chevrolet Tahoe’s, Internal Affairs Commander Sgt. Ken Carona said.

“All fleet accidents are investigated internally for any potential policy rule or law violations,” Carona said.

The investigation could take as long as three weeks, he added. If the officer is disciplined the issue will be sent to Human Resources and the public would have access to the findings and results.

Both Henry and Klinkhammer were treated at Christus Hospital-St. Mary for complaints of soreness and released. The emergency room physician ordered both officers to stay off work until Oct. 25 to be reevaluated before returning to work. Carona explained that neither officer is on any type of administrative leave and are only off work on the order of the ER physician.

Both Henry and Klinkhammer are 19 year veterans of the police department.
