PORT NECHES —
The Neches River in Port Neches will be filled with holiday cheer during the Lighted Boat Parade on Saturday.
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 15 and boats ranging in size from aluminum boats to 50-foot yachts will participate. The event is sponsored by the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce’s ambassadors committee.
Kathy Beuscher, who chairs the committee, said about 14 boats have signed up to participate and many of them are coming from the Beaumont Yacht Club and Port Arthur Yacht Club.
Prizes will be awarded for best use of the theme (Christmas), most unique and best use of lights.
The parade marshal will be the winners of the 2012 Miss Port Neches Pageant; Miss Port Neches Morgan McLain, Future Miss Port Neches Taryn Crochet, Junior Miss Port Neches Channing Hebert, and Young Miss Port Neches Lace Coker. The queens will be riding in a boat owned by Troy and Tami Crochet.
Last year’s boat parade started out as small with five boat entries.
“It was small, to say the least,” Beuscher said with a chuckle. “But we’ve grown and every year hope top grow more.”
Visitors to the boat parade can also take a trip around Port Neches Riverfront Park to see the newest addition — lighted Christmas cards in the park.
The cards will be lit every evening from 5 to 10 p.m. during the season. Cars are invited to drive through the park starting at one entrance on Grigsby, then turning in front of the pavilion and back out onto Grigsby.
Debbie Plaia, executive director of the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce, feels that Port Neches Riverfront Park is a great venue for the holiday events.
“I think it’s great,” Plaia said. “We have a beautiful park. The goal is to have the park lit up in three years as a way to bring an attraction to the city.”
Beuscher said the Christmas cards, which are sponsored by chamber members, feature a holiday message. Sandra Flores of Groves painted the 12 signs or cards in less than a month’s time.
