PORT ARTHUR —
Ever wondered the secret to a long and happy marriage? Look no further than Joseph and Molly Breaux, who have been married for 58 years.
“She’s the boss,” Joseph said. “The only time you get to say no is when you’re by yourself.”
Joseph and Molly were just one couple in attendance at the Walgreens annual Valentine’s Day party on Thursday. Held at the OCAW building, Walgreens stores from Orange to Port Neches honored couples who have been married for half a century or more.
This is something the area stores have been doing for more than 35 years, said Danae Gaspard, the event’s organizer.
“It’s a way for us to give back to our customers and celebrate their love,” said Gaspard, who has worked at the Port Neches store for 11 years. “To be married 50 years — that’s quite a feat. And we thought Valentine’s Day was a very appropriate time for that.”
The couples are treated to cake, punch and door prizes throughout the afternoon, and can even get a photograph to commemorate the occasion.
A dozen roses are given to the couple with the longest marriage, with the runner-up receiving half a dozen.
The event has expanded significantly since its beginning, Gaspard said. About 12 couples attended the first party, which was held in the lobby of a local Walgreens store. This year saw 115 couples — one of the largest turn-outs in the event’s history.
“We normally start getting calls in January, asking when it’s going to be, where to get tickets,” Gaspard said. “And they get here early, early — the party is from 2 to 4, and they start showing up around 12:45.”
Joseph and Molly Breaux have attended the event since they became eligible eight years ago. It has quickly become one of the highlights of the year for them.
“We look forward to it every year,” Joseph said.
