PORT NECHES —
A partial collapse of a sanitary sewer line in Port Neches has caused city officials in Port Neches to declare the problem an emergency.
The city identified the problematic segment of line at Ninth Street and Doornbos Street and on Thursday made the emergency declaration which allows officials to expedite repairs by easing the restrictions of the bidding process.
Port Neches City Manager Andrè Wimer explained city officials anticipated the cost of repairs to exceed $50,000 which would generally require a formal bid process.
“In this particular situation, however, I believe that a threat to public health and safety exists such that the situation can be defined as an ‘emergency,’” Wimer said, referring to Texas Local Government Code.
Wimer said the 12-inch sanitary sewer line provides service to a significant portion of the city, both commercial and residential.
Council formally declared the situation and emergency and awarded a contract to Allco for a cost of $125,255.20. Work will begin on the line late next week.
