SLIDESHOW: Cajuns celebrate heritage at annual French Mass

The Port Arthur News

PORT NECHES — Les Acadiens du Texas celebrated this area’s Cajun French heritage with the annual Acadien French Mass Sunday morning at La Maison Beausoleil Museum at Port Neches Riverfront Park.

The Rev. Gary Schexnayder of Lafayette, La., presented the message mostly in French but with enough English that those without bilingual skills in the crowd of over 200 could keep up.

Les Chanteurs du Texas choir, under the direction of Nada Hebert, performed hymns in French.

Eric Kelley, 12, of Port Neches played lead on the fiddle while his sister, Elizabeth, 14, played accordian with the Dallas Street Ramblers, who performed after the Mass.

Gumbo, boudain, and other dishes completed the celebration of the Acadian language and culture sponsored annually by Les Acadiens du Texas, a local non-profit organization established in 1980.
