Judge John Paul Davis, of Jefferson County Court at Law No. 3, died Monday morning, County Judge Jeff Branick said.
Branick said that Davis, 74, was in apparent good health when his wife left for work that morning. Sometime between her departure and 8 a.m., medical technicians found him unresponsive at his Beaumont home and took him to a local hospital.
Davis, who took the County Court at Law No. 3 bench in 1989, was dearly loved at the courthouse, Branick said.
“You hear people say, ‘He’ll be missed,’ all the time when people pass away — well, he truly will be missed,” Branick said. “He had a heart as big as Texas, and he brought a real sense of empathy and fairness to the bench at that court. He was just the consummate public servant.”
It will fall to the Commissioners’ Court to appoint a replacement to the bench, Branick said.
