RiverFest kicks-off Wednesday

PORT NECHES — The carnival rides are up and the vendors are ready — it’s Port Neches RiverFest time.

The festival, scheduled for April 30 through May 4, kicks off with a new event this year — Youth Night featuring the Christian band Sidewalk Prophets.

Debbie Plaia, executive director of the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce, said the 2014 Riverfest will be great.

“We are excited about the addition of Youth Night. Our phones have been blowing up,” Plaia said. “I don’t think we can grasp just how big it’s going to be. Our goal is to have 15,000 to 20,000 on Wednesday night with churches coming from all over the Golden Triangle.”

In addition to the Might Thomas Carnival rides and numerous vendors, the festival will feature l entertainment on the main stage including Wayne Toups on Thursday night and Aaron Watson and Roger Creager on Friday night. The Molly Ringwalds will perform on Saturday night.

Saturday is jam packed with events and more beginning with the start of the two-day fishing tournament bright and early at 6 a.m. followed by registration for the photo contest at the Hebert Library.

The Classic Car and Motorcycle Show and BBQ Cook-off , held near Tugboat Island in the park, will also get underway Saturday.

A Veteran’s Parade to honor military will start at 11 a.m. at the Port Neches Fire Station on Merriman and end at the pavilion with a ceremony.

RiverPasses, which allows unlimited carnival rides and entrance to the entertainment complex, will be sold from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wright Building on Port Neches Avenue.

All-inclusive wristbands for the boat races and entertainment complex are also on sale. General admission is $15 and good for all four nights. Wednesday prices are $5 and youth five and under get in free.

Plaia sees the festival as a win-win for the city and the area.

“We always get an overwhelming amount of support and, with the addition of Youth Night, we will see even more,” she said. “We are hoping this will bring more tourism to the area by adding the extra day (Wednesday’s activities). We are always focused on being a family event and I think the Youth Night activities exemplifies this.”
