PORT ARTHUR —
The employees of the Valero Port Arthur Refinery raised more than half a million dollars to donate to the United Way of Mid and South Jefferson County this holiday season. Janie Johnson, executive director of the area United Way, said the requests for aid had doubled this year and that this record-breaking donation would help “tens of thousands of lives.” United Way’s total goal was $1.2 million, so “we literally could not do it without you guys,” Johnson said. Most of the pledges for the $566,680-donation came from union members.
