NEDERLAND — tanding near a butter yellow, country-style kitchen table and hutch set Shawn Hanley shook hands and received hugs from a plethora of well wishers on Thursday.

The numerous guests at Howell Furniture’s newest location inside Ritter at Home Shopping Center on FM 365 mingled around living room sets and past accent tables, took in some hors d’oeuvre’s and chatted.

Hanley, along with business partners Wade and Wanda Witt and Tom and Sondra Schwaab, worked hard to ensure the store would be ready to open.

“We are so excited to be in Nederland and for the response tonight,” Hanley said. “You make us feel so welcome. This is beyond our expectations.”

The 30,000 square-feet store is located in a long unused portion of what once was Walmart on FM 365. Ritter at Home is the immediate neighbor.

“This is less than half the size of the Beaumont store but the same size as the Lake Charles location,” she said. “We picked the best of the best from the other stores and put them here.”

The store sports “something for everyone.”

“We literally have something for everyone’s taste,” she added.

When Lanora Read of Port Neches walked through the doors of the store, she immediately knew it was Howell’s, she said.

“I think it’s fantastic. I’m so excited for them,” Read said. “This is a wonderful addition to Mid-County.”

Nederland Mayor Dick Nugent went on a trip down memory lane when he entered the store. Hanley’s grandfather and Nugent’s brother-in-law started the business decades ago, he said.

But the reminiscing didn’t stop there.

Nugent still owns the solid maple bedroom suite and tables he bought from the Beaumont location more than 40 years ago.
