Woman punched in face, purse stolen

PORT ARTHUR — A 63-year-old woman was struck in the face and her purse stolen Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses in the area were able to chase the robber down and retrieve the purse but the robber fled the scene.

Police were called to H.E.B. Grocery, 3401 Gulfway Drive, at about 5:20 p.m. Dec. 21.

The victim told officers that a man had struck her in the face with his fist and grabbed her purse. She had just exited the store and was walking to her car when attacked, according to a press release from the Port Arthur Police Department,

The suspect fled on foot behind the store with the purse and a witness in the parking lot saw the suspect run with the purse and began chasing him. About a block into the foot chase another man that was in his yard joined in and the two were able to grab onto the suspect and get the woman’s purse back and all of its contents.

The two witnesses tried to hang on to the suspect but the suspect was able to get away from them and fled on foot. He was not located by officers at the time of the report.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male with a dark complexion about 5-foot 10-inches in height with short hair. He is possibly in his 20s.
