PORT ARTHUR —
Tisha Sedatole looked carefully at the tags hanging from a white Christmas tree at King’s Pharmacy while waiting for her prescription to be filled.
She soon made a decision and plucked a tag from the tree and is now on the road to making the holiday merrier for a senior citizen through the seventh annual Be a Santa to a Senior program.
“I think they (seniors) shouldn’t have to go without either,” Sedatole said at the 8455 Ninth Ave. location. “Some don’t have many family left or are on a fixed income.”
The Meals on Wheels Program, senior organizations and area retailers are partnering with event sponsor Home Instead Senior Care to brighten the lives of senior citizens in Jefferson, Orange and Hardin counties. Christmas trees will be located in participating stores with ornaments that feature the senior’s name along with their wish list. There are more than 100 participating stores and businesses in Southeast Texas. Participants are identified by local senior citizen service providers, according to a press release from Home Instead Senior Care.
Carlene Wheat, an employee at King’s Pharmacy, said she and fellow employees look forward to the annual tree and a chance to help others.
“Even at the end, if some of the tags are left, we grab those because we can’t not do it,” Wheat, the mother of five children, said.
