A man and woman who reportedly had seven ounces of methamphetamine along with three children in their vehicle led deputies on a chase Tuesday.

Law enforcement was doing surveillance in the LaBelle-Fannett area around noon when the male suspect was allegedly involved in a drug transaction. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over on U.S. 69 near the Jefferson County Correctional Facility when the suspect led them on a slow chase, Deputy Chief Ron Hobbs with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver was eventually pulled over near a church along the U.S. 69 access road after having tried to ram the undercover officers car. From there the man got out and ran.

“Officers chased him for a couple of hundred yards. He fought with officers. They’re ok but one has a black eye, bumps and scrapes,” Hobbs said.

The officers were checked out by emergency medical personnel for minor injuries.

Both the man and the woman were placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance after officers found the seven ounces of meth in the vehicle.

“And in all likelihood they will face charges of child endangerment,” he said.

The children range in age from one to 12 years of age and are in custody of a family member.

The male suspect also faces charges of assault on a peace officer.
