Former Port Arthur ISD football coach Mike Owens dies

Former Port Arthur Football Coach Mike Owens passed away Monday night. Owens coached at Thomas Jefferson High School for 14 years before moving to Tyler Lee High School. 

Owens began his career as head coach for Thomas Jefferson High School leading them to five playoff appearances. 

Owens went on to coach for Tyler Legacy from 1996-2010, where maintained a winning record and led the program to a state football title in 2004. 

 In August, Tyler Legacy named their field house in honor of Owens after he retired from the program in 2011. 

Funeral arrangements have not been made at this time. 

Owens was 73 years old.
