Brandon Holmes, Rae Shauna Gay win Groves Councilmember seats

Groves voters elected two new faces for City Council for Wards 2 and 4 in a runoff election.

Brandon Holmes defeated incumbent Paul Oliver in Ward 2 with 62% of the vote to 38%.

Holmes is a newer face to Groves as he was born in Louisiana where he earned his engineering degree at Louisiana Tech University. He has been a resident of Groves for over 5 years now and became interested in the local government after hearing about the rise of property taxes and water bill costs. Holmes hopes to create a comprehensive strategic plan for the city to better give citizens an idea of what their taxes are paying for.

I want to make a positive difference,” said Holmes. ”I believe that my background equips me to be a contributing member of our City Council. I know that my family’s current stage of life allows me to tune into the needs of our community.”

Rea Shauna Gay defeated Kyle Hollier in Ward 4 with 85% of the vote to 15% of the vote.

Gay now holds the chair for Ward 4 defeating incumbent Rhonda Dugas, who was removed from her city economic development corporation board in October in connection with her conduct during a meeting.

Gay has been a resident of Groves for over 19 years. She became involved in the community after opening her business. She aims to improve safety in local neighborhoods so that everyone can thrive and feel their voices are heard.

I believe in the strength and resilience of our community, and I am excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work on the issues that matter most to you,” said Gay. “I will strive every day to be a council member who listens, who is accessible, and who never forgets why I am here: to serve you. Together, we can make our vision for this city a reality. Thank you for this incredible opportunity. I am honored to represent you, and I won’t let you down.”

Both candidates will be sworn in Monday, Dec 23.
