Mayfield, Morse up for WRS award

Nederland defensive back Tavian Mayfield and Port Neches-Groves quarterback Adam Morse have been named finalists for the Willie Ray Smith award.
The award will be handed out at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Elegante in Beaumont.
Joining Morse on the offensive side is Silsbee quarterback Dontre Thomas, Hamshire-Fannett quarterback Kendrick King and West Orange-Stark quarterback Jack Dallas.
The other three defensive finalists are West Brook safety Innis Gaines, West Orange-Stark linebacker Steven Tims and Silsbee linebacker Michael McCain.
Mayfield finished the year with 116 tackles, 75 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and three interceptions.
Tims leads the group with 215 tackles, 107 solo tackles, six quarterback pressures and was the MVP of the state championship game in Class 4A Division II.
McCain finished with 107 tackles, six sacks and helped guide the Tigers to the fourth round of the playoffs.
Gaines had 124 tackles, three forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles and was a key part in West Brook’s trip to the playoffs.
Thomas arguably has the best numbers coming out of Southeast Texas on either side of the ball. He rushed for 1,883 yards, threw for 3,043 yards and scored a total of 68 touchdowns.
Morse had 3,098 passing yards, 350 rushing yards and finished with 45 combined touchdowns.
Dallas led the Mustangs to the Class 4A Division II championship, threw for 3,113 yards and had 44 touchdowns.
King rushed for 1,849 yards, threw for 725 and combined for 36 scores.
