PORT NECHES — Members of Port Neches-Groves High School’s class of 1970 are ready to honor their school with the addition of a statue depicting an Indian warrior on horseback.
Now they just need a location.
PN-G alumni Bill Sealey addressed trustees with Port Neches-Groves Independent School District earlier this year with the plan. A decision on the location will likely be made during the 7 p.m. board meeting on Monday at West Groves Education Center in Groves.
Sealey said there are several locations that were discussed by committee members. One area which was discussed — near the stadium, wouldn’t be a good fit since the stadium isn’t always accessible, he said. Sealey didn’t elaborate on the exact location the committee finally decided upon as the issue will go before the school board for final consideration.
“There were up to four sites looked at by the committee,” Sealey said. “We prefer a large enough area to accommodate a patio around the statue with bricks that will go on sale soon.”
The committee is in the process of applying for non-profit status.
Big Statues in Provo, Utah are tapped to create the statue of an Indian warrior on horseback with spear raised. Once completed, the statue will be one and one-quarter life size and about 14-plus feet in height when measuring from the pedestal to the tip of the warrior’s lance.
The cost is about $75,000 not including shipping and related costs. Big Statues has already provided an artists rendition of the statue.
PN-GISD Superintendent Rodney Cavness said he believes the addition of the statue will be good for the district as well as alumni and staff.
Trustees are set to discuss a number of other issues:
• Consider approving a property easement in favor of the Jules II subdivision that will also help with the district’s drainage issues.
• Consider approval of an employee compensation plan.
• Report: 2015-2016 draft budget.
• Possible sale of 12.86 acres of district property.
• Either move forward with construction of the multipurpose facility or refund all donations.
