Discovery Channel show to feature fallen BPD officer

This Sunday, Oct. 4, at 9 p.m. the Discovery Channel will be airing the program called, “On The Case”, with Paula Zahn focusing on victims in murder cases.

One of the cases will be the murder of Beaumont Police Officer, Paul Hulsey on March 22, 1988. This case led officers to locate and capture the serial murderer later that evening. He was tried, convicted and sentences to death in the next two years. His execution was carried out in Texas on Dec. 9, 1997.

Hulsey, 30, was shot and killed while investigating a vehicle with stolen plates, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. He had spotted the vehicle in a hotel parking lot and learned it was stolen after running its tags. Hulsey requested backup after learning which room the suspect was in but backup was sent to a fatal auto-pedestrian call.

Hulsey approached the suspect who was able to retrieve a gun form the room and fatally shot Hulsey. The officer had no idea the suspect, identified as Michael Lee Lockhart, was wanted in Florida for killing a 14-year-old girl and in Indiana for killing a 16-year-old girl and robbing a bank.

“While many of us (Beaumont Police Officers) were not part of the police department at that time, we feel the sacrifices officer Hulsey made,” according to a press release from BPD. “Many of the detectives/investigators at the time have moved on, but still remember the incident as if it occurred yesterday.

Although the show will display the murderer and the murders he committed over several years, we will always remember those victims and the ultimate sacrifices made by law enforcement to protect the future.”
