The main hazard for Port Arthur and Southeast Texas this week looks to be excessive rainfall, with a flood potential as a slow moving upper level trough will interact with rich Gulf moisture, according to Joe Rua.

The lead forecaster the National Weather Service Lake Charles office this is likely a multi-day heavy rainfall event starting later Monday and lasting until at least early Thursday.

Storm total average rainfall amounts areawide look to be in the 4- to 6-inch range.

“As this event unfolds, we will try to pin point where the heavier rain bands may develop,” Rua said. “Also, as conditions become more wet, the flood potential along with the chance for flash flood watches may increase.”

At first, urban type street flooding and poor drainage low land flooding is going to be the greatest impact.

“However, as the week progresses, more hydrologic impacts are possible, along with river flooding,” Rua said. “It was once stated by an old forecaster that many a drought are ended by floods.”

There is also a small potential for severe weather on Tuesday into Wednesday.

This will be due to a highly wind sheared environment and if any favorable instability can move inland from the coast.

It also looks like a windy day Monday, especially south of the highway 190 corridor.

A Wind Advisory is in effect, and for the marine interests a Small Craft Advisory will be in effect into Monday night.
