(Editor’s note: The weekend edition of The Port Arthur News will include interviews with Stephanie Barron and Britney Brevell talking about their initial reactions to winning and plans for the future.)
Two Port Neches-Groves High graduates recently earned $20,000 scholarship boosts.
Stephanie Barron and Britney Brevell won the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo scholarships, which were announced by the Jefferson County Go Texan Committee.
Barron and Brevell were two of 41 recipients whose scholarships were awarded this week in a first ever virtual Facebook event.
“This is going to be a very special group of students with consideration given to COVID,” said Clint Burges, Jefferson County Go Texan Ambassador. “We’re excited to be a part of the future of Jefferson County with these students.”
Each of the 68 participating Area Go Texan counties awards a scholarship to one of their respective graduating high school seniors.
An additional 10 awards are given at large to eligible students within these counties, which includes Jefferson County.
From the 1970s, Jefferson County Go Texan has more than $600,000 in committed scholarships and assisted more than 269 students within Jefferson County.
This year the committee is dispersing more than $81,000 to the youth of Jefferson County, a first in committee history.
“The committee has worked hard alongside some of the most outstanding sponsors we could ever ask for,” Burges said. “We’re ecstatic to bring educational assistance to the county, region, and the youth of Texas.”
