The concerning impacts of COVID-19 in Port Arthur started Tuesday with news that a second resident in as many days lost their life due to the disease and ended with news that 40 residents tested positive in the previous 24 hours.

According to the City of Port Arthur Health Department, the 40 new confirmations Tuesday bring the total to 579 Port Arthur residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 since testing started in the City of Port Arthur.

Health officials said the second most impacted area in the region was Jefferson County zip code 77627, where 12 additional residents tested positive Tuesday for COVID-19. This brings the total to 203 individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 in this zip code since testing began.

The city of Nederland announced it received information that the number of total positive COVID-19 test results increased to 162 with nine new positive cases on Tuesday. The estimate on active cases is approximately 80, city officials said.

“We hope to firm up that number (Wednesday),” a city statement said.

“To clarify, the City’s method of new positives is based on the names and corresponding addresses of City of Nederland residents who have tested positive; this information is relayed to our first responders so they are prepared to answer any calls for service at this address.”

Officials said this method of counting positives does lend itself to “double-counting” or multiple-counting as previously asked.

For Port Neches on Tuesday, the City of Port Arthur and Jefferson County Health Departments received confirmation of nine additional Port Neches residents who tested positive for coronavirus.

This brings the total to 122 Port Neches residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 since testing began.

For Groves on Tuesday, the City of Port Arthur and Jefferson County Health Departments received confirmation of four additional positive COVID-19 cases in residents of Groves.

This brings the total to 126 individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 for the City of Groves since testing began.
