BOB WEST CHIP SHOTS — Chris Stroud makes cut in Ohio

Chris Stroud had another solid week at the Workday and did it the hard way. Stroud made the cut despite taking a triple bogey 8 on his sixth hole on Thursday. He wound up shooting rounds of 71-71-71-72 for a three-under 285 that tied for 47th and earned $16,306.

Stroud is ineligible to play in this week’s Memorial, also being played at Muirfield Village, because it is an invitational and he doesn’t have the points. Andrew Landry, who missed the cut in the Workday with rounds of 75-74, is in the Memorial field. …

After a missed cut in Victoria, Braden Bailey’s next APT stop is this week’s Texarkana Children’s Charity Open. Bailey, following an uncharacteristic opening round of 81 in Victoria, came back strong with a 66 but it wasn’t enough to get him two more rounds. …

One of the longest ongoing tournaments in Southeast Texas — The Old Glory at Wildwood — was contested over the Fourth of July weekend. The team of Chris Rieve and Steve Martin teamed for rounds for 64-61 to win Championship Flight by four shots with a 125.

Other flight winners included Dennis Hunt-David Feldshau with a 131 in Presidential, JK Miller-Craig Colbert at 134 in First, Bobby Ratcliff-Dwayne Ratcliff with 135 in Second and Todd Paine-Josh Picard at 139 in Third.

Bryce Armstrong-Sonny Garcia took Fourth Flight with a 149 and Dwayne Morvant-Larry Reece captured the Senior Flight with a 128. …

The team of James Vercher, Bob Byerly, Rick Pritchett and ghost player Paul Duplantis scored a sweep in the Monday Senior 50 Plus 2 ball at Babe Zaharias. They were minus 4 on the front and minus 6 on the back. …

In the Super Saturday 2 ball at Zaharias, the fivesome of James Shipley, Morvant, Larry Foster, Keith Marshall and Evan Baker won the front with minus 4. On the back, minus 5 won for the foursome of Ron LaSalle, Brian Mirabella, Pritchett and Larry Lee. …

The Friday 2 ball at Zaharias saw the front finish in a tie at minus 4 between the team of Don MacNeil, Pritchett and Joe Gongora and the team of Cap Hollier, Adam Noel, Gene Jones and Jeff Greenway. Minus 2 won the back for the foursome of Bob West, Raymond Darbonne, Scott Bryant and Pete Reobroi. …

All points count was the format for the Wednesday Babe Zaharias DogFight. Placing first with 29 points was the team of Crickett Owen, Steve Wisenbaker, Jerry May and Don Duplan. Teams captained by Vercher and Ed Holley tied for second with 24 points.

Closest to the pin winners were Brian Mirabella (No. 2, 2 feet, 8 inches, No. 7, 9-8), Steve Wisenbaker (No. 12, 10-7) and Calvin Landry (No. 15, 4-10). …

The PNG Boys Golf Fundraising Tournament, postponed earlier in the year, has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 25, at 8 a.m. at Babe Zaharias. Format is a four-person scramble. Entry fee is $300 per team.

5 Under Golf Center in Beaumont, after being closed for 10 days following a COVID 19 issue, reopened last Friday at 11 a.m. and is back to normal operating hours. According to CEO Austin Williams, the facility was cleaned twice by Space City Sanitizers and existing CDC protocols will be strictly observed going forward.

In accordance with local and state guidelines, all guests and employees will be required to wear facemasks. Temperatures are being taken before anyone can enter the facility.

Among the highlights this week at 5 Under are a Titleist fitting day and Scott Cameron fitting day Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. Those who sign up for the Titleist fitting will be given a free sleeve of Pro VI golf balls. …
