NEDERLAND — The Nederland Swimming Pool is staying closed for the remainder of the summer, city officials announced Monday evening.

The decision was announced after a city council meeting and “following extensive discussion.”

“We thank the pool staff for their efforts to have a safe pool season, but unfortunately, we do not believe it is prudent to keep the pool open amid the increasing COVID-19 cases,” a city statement read. “We look forward to a safe and exciting pool season next summer. If you have any questions, call the City Manager’s Office at 723-1503.”

On Monday, the City of Nederland also announced the number of total positive COVID-19 test results increased to 109 with six new positive cases.

“At this time, we do not have an update on the active case number,” a city statement read. “We ask that people follow the health guidelines prescribed by the State of Texas, specifically hand washing, social distancing and wearing a mask when out.”

The Nederland Swimming Pool was first closed for two weeks in late June.

On June 21, the City was advised two employees who work at the Nederland Swimming Pool were going to test due to possible COVID-19 exposure.

On June 24, the Parks staff was notified one employee tested positive for COVID-19 and the other tested negative for COVID-19.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Nederland Swimming Pool will be closed for two weeks and will re-open on Saturday, July 4,” City Manager Chris Duque said at the time. “When the pool re-opens, the City will continue to prioritize the health and safety of patrons and pool employees via social distancing at the pool and regular cleaning.”

Businesses in Jefferson County must require patrons wear masks per the governor’s order.

The governor has closed bars in the state, and restaurant capacity is contracted to 50 percent capacity.
