A Nederland resident has died as a result of coronavirus-related issues, health officials said.

The announcement was made at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday, with the City of Nederland indicating there were underlying medical conditions with the victim.

“Our thoughts and prayers extend to their family and friends,” a city release said.

The City of Port Arthur and Jefferson County Health Departments acknowledged the news Thursday, as well, “with great sadness.”

Health officials said the victim was a white female between the age range of 65 and 70.

“We emphasize again that COVID-19 is a very serious disease,” a Port Arthur Health Department statement read. “While 80 percent of individuals who contract COVID-19 will have mild to moderate symptoms and fully recover, they may spread the disease to people who are at high risk. The elderly and people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems are at a much higher risk for developing serious complications from COVID-19.”

It is strongly advised by local medical officials that at-risk individuals minimize contact with others who are ill, practice social distancing and wear a mask when in public.

The death is the second COVID-19-related death of a Nederland resident announced this year.

The first was a white female between 85 and 90 who had underlying health issues reported April 21.

There have been seven Port Arthur residents reported to have died following complications with coronavirus, health officials said.
