Two weeks after a long pandemic break, Chris Stroud finds himself in contention of a win on the PGA Tour.

The Groves native shot a season-low 63 in the third round of the RBC Heritage tournament Saturday in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

The round leaves Stroud in an eight-man tie for eighth place, two shots off four-way leaders Tyrrell Hatton, Abraham Ancer, Ryan Palmer and Webb Simpson. The leaders each have shot 15-under 198 through three rounds.

When Stroud finished his round early in the afternoon, his 8-under-par round matched two others who had already signed their cards, then-leader Carlos Ortiz (69-67-63—199) and Joaquin Niemann (69-68-63—200). Stroud shot rounds of 68-69-63.

Hatton, who started the tournament with a 71, and Joel Dahmen have matched the round.

Andrew Landry, who like Stroud hails from Groves and practiced on the old Pea Patch course, is one stroke behind Stroud in a six-way tie for 16th. Landry shot 68-67-66.

Stroud is going for only his second career PGA Tour victory and first in three years. His best finish this season was an 18th-place tie at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico in November. He shot his previous low of 66 in the first round of that tournament.

Landry is going for his second tour win this season and third of his career. The former University of Arkansas star won the American Express tournament in California on Jan. 19.

The RBC Heritage is the second live golf tournament on the PGA Tour since the coronavirus pandemic. Eight tournaments have been canceled and two have yet to be rescheduled.

Golf Channel will air the final round from noon-2 p.m. Sunday (June 21), with CBS (KFDM-6) to pick up the rest of the action afterward.
