CHIP SHOTS: Senior 2 ball at Babe Zaharias heats up

Despite COVID-19 wiping out the district, regional and state tournaments, the 10th annual Babe Zaharias Awards honoring high school golfers are going to be presented next week in a function at 5 Under Golf Center in Beaumont.
Presented by the Babe Didriksen Zaharias Foundation and Champions Youth Development, the awards recognize the high school male and female player of the year and acknowledge the male and female character/leadership honoree.
Author and motivational speaker Damon West is the evening’s guest speaker . . .
The Tuesday senior 2 ball at Babe Zaharias saw the team of Kenny Robbins, Gerald Huebel, Harrell Guidry and Keith Marshall win the front with minus 1. On the back, the foursome of Cap Hollier, Don MacNeil, Mike Tibbets and ghost Darrell Mouville took first with minus 1 . . .
In the Monday Senior 50 Plus par 4 game, the team of Ronnie LaSalle, Raymond Darbonne, Larry Foster and James Vercher swept by going 13 under on the front and 10 under on the back.
The Super Saturday Senior 2 ball saw the team of James Shipley, Rusty Hicks, Jon Jackson and Cole Lee take the front with minus 2. On the back, there was a three-way tie at minus 2 between teams captained by Robbins, Craig Geoffroy and Derrick Wolff . . .
Seniors played the par 4, 2 ball format on Friday, with the team of Bob West, Don MacNeil, Ron Mistrot and Wes McDonald taking the front with minus 12. Minus 10 won the back for Mike Brown, Hollier, Scott Bryant and Pete Reobroi . . .
The Wednesday Babe Zaharias DogFight also employed the par 4 format but for 18 holes. Placing first was the team of Earl Richard, Calvin Landry, McDonald and Don Duplan with 23 points. Second with 22 points was the foursome of Jim Cady, Hollier, Foster and Scott Welch . . .
Several VIP club fitting days are set for 5 Under Golf Center in June. Calloway will do fittings from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Cleveland, XXIO and Srixon will be on hand from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. June 18 and Wilson is set for 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 19.
5 Under is hosting four-day junior golf camps starting each Monday in June and July. The camps run from 9 a.m. to noon daily for juniors ages 6-12, with a cost of $150 per child. Julie Aime and Jordan Bell are the instructors.
