The Captain William Sanders Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored 20 graduates with scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each.

Coronavirus has had an effect on so many activities this graduation season. The DAR chapter still awarded the scholarships but had to forgo the usual reception for this year’s graduates, their parents, counselors and DAR members.

The students will be mailed their certificates of merit and Lamar’s scholarship board will forward the $1,000 to the college of the scholar’s choice when the college receives notification the student has enrolled.

Recipients this school year are:

• Bob Hope School — Jocelyn Diaz, Vicky Longoria, Imelda Barriga, and Melany Esquivel;
• Memorial High School — Chloe Guidry and Tyson Nguyen;
• Nederland High School — Kasey Rule, Katelyn Patterson, Melody Youwakim, Han Vo, Wiilliam Denson, DeMorieh Washington, and Brock Holton;
• Port Neches-Groves High School — Channing Hebert, Zane Hernandez, Kendall Holman, Kristen Nguyen, Travis Wommack, Kaylee Gutierres, and Kasidee Sartin.

Stella Corcoran White chartered the Captain William Sanders Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, in Port Arthur in October 1937. White Haven was her home. She and her husband established the Carl and Stella White Scholarship Fund strictly for educating young people. Scholarships have been given every year since 1988. Students from Jefferson County apply in their counselor’s office and the Board of Higher Education at Lamar makes the selection.

Graduates will receive $1,000 credit toward educational expenses at the college of their choice. That makes a total of $20,000 given by Captain William Sanders Chapter for the year of 2020 reported by Chapter Registrar Betty Brownlee.
