Lamar Port Arthur returning to in-class instruction this fall; late summer model under discussion

Lamar State College Port Arthur will return to in-class instruction for the Fall 2020 semester, officials announced Friday.
Administrators also announced Friday that Summer I semester work will be exclusively online as a precaution against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The college’s Summer I semesters run from June 1 to July 6, 2020 and includes technical and general education studies.
As for Summer II and Summer III, Port Arthur administrators are still in discussions about those semesters.
Summer II runs from July 7 to Aug. 11.
Summer III is predominantly allied health classes, heavy in lab work. The discussion that’s underway is whether there is a safe option for having students on campus for those labs.
“With all the uncertainty that has existed the past two months, it is encouraging to consider a Fall 2020 semester with students returning to campus,” LSCPA President Dr. Betty Reynard said. “Obviously, the culture of face-to-face instruction will be much different than in years past. As always, the safety of students and employees is our first priority.
“We will consider a variety of options that will provide our students with an optimal educational experience while taking every precaution possible against COVID-19. As we move into the summer months and state and national health officials offer updated guidelines, we will make more definite plans on how in-person classes will look at Lamar State College Port Arthur this fall.”
An executive committee for the Port Arthur campus will continue to monitor the coronavirus pandemic to help determine the best path to take for additional summer semesters and the upcoming Fall semester.
