Three more positive cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Port Arthur on Wednesday, bringing the city’s total to 36.

The patients include two males between the ages of 50 and 55, one of which is currently hospitalized, and the other is between ages 80 and 85, according to a news release from the city of Port Arthur. The gentlemen not hospitalized are quarantined at home and cooperating with local health officials.

The confirmations come one day after the Port Arthur Health Department announced two more COVID-19 related deaths.

The Port Arthur and Jefferson County health departments reported Tuesday the death of a Nederland resident identified as a white female between 85 and 90 years old, who authorities said had underlying health conditions. It is Nederland’s first death related to the novel virus.

The patient died in the hospital.

“Nederland’s total positive test results stayed at 10 (four active cases and six recovered cases),” the city of Nederland announced Tuesday. “(Tuesday), the City is saddened to report the first COVID-19-related death occurred (there was an underlying medical condition). Our thoughts and prayers extend to their family and friends.”

The Port Arthur Health Department also reported the third COVID-19 related death of a Port Arthur resident, a Hispanic male between 65 and 70 years old who had been previously reported as a positive COVID-19 case for Port Arthur.

The patient had underlying health conditions and died in the hospital, authorities said.

“We emphasize again that COVID-19 is a very serious disease,” a Port Arthur Health Department statement reads. “While 80 percent of individuals who contract COVID-19 will have mild to moderate symptoms and fully recover, they may spread the disease to people who are at high risk. The elderly and people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems are at a much higher risk for developing serious complications from COVID-19.

“We strongly advise at-risk individuals to minimize contact with others who are ill and practice social distancing.”
