The Port Arthur Police Department called out its SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team Saturday night after a vehicle drove off the road, leading to the driver firing multiple shots in a neighborhood setting.

Det. Sadie Guedry said authorities responded to the 5400 block of Tremont Street at approximately 10:16 p.m. in reference to a vehicle that went off the road.

A caller told police the driver was out of the vehicle, acting erratically and “showing signs of an altered mental status,” according to Guedry.

As officers arrived, they observed a male run into a house that was his residence.

“As soon as the male went inside, the officers then heard multiple gunshots coming from the residence,” Guedry said. “It was unknown to officers who was inside the residence. Officers made several attempts to contact the subject, but were unsuccessful.”

Port Arthur’s SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team were contacted to come to the scene. Shortly after their arrival, Guedry said contact with the resident was established, leading to the man coming outside.

Guedry said the man, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Authorities said no one was injured during the crash, shooting or standoff and no charges are pending at this time.
