NEDERLAND — The Nederland Independent School District 2019 bond project is in the construction documentation phase for the reconstruction of all four elementary schools.

Bidding begins sometime this summer.

IBI Group Inc. released design developments for Helena Park, Highland Park, Hillcrest and Langham elementary school campuses in mid-February, with preliminary construction dates set for summer 2020.

Nederland ISD Assistant Superintendent Mike Laird said at this point the timeline has not changed.

“We are still on schedule by conducting virtual meetings,” he said. “The current situation has not changed the bond timeline.”

Bulldog Stadium is currently closed to begin preparations for turf installation and track improvements.

The $4.5 million project involves an expanded boardwalk, new restrooms, ticket booth, entrance, elevator and press box.

The first step includes resurfacing the field with artificial turf. Bidding for the turf took place at the March board meeting.

The high school is nearing the design development milestone. Once the design is approved, the construction document phase will begin and bidding will follow in late fall.

Middle school campuses are currently in the schematic design phase and constructions dates are to be determined.

“We are proud to say that the bond projects have remained on schedule amidst this crisis,” Laird said. “We look forward to presenting the high school design development mid- to late-May.”

Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) HB Neild is installing a temporary office at the high school. HB Neild will manage all district bond projects from this location.

Arrangements are being made for the summer demolition package at Langham Elementary, which includes the installation of temporary classrooms.

The bond proposal also includes technology and safety initiatives that began during the current school year. Progress will continue being made toward additional implementation of the one student, one device program when school resumes in the fall. In the 1:1 program, each student will be given an electronic device to use for learning.

In May 2019, NISD voters passed the $151.1 million bond proposition that included a new high school, upgrades to Central and C.O. Wilson Middle Schools with expansion to all four elementary schools.

Nederland ISD’s next board meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday and will be held virtually.
