On Tuesday, April 14, 2020, Sis. Genevieve John peacefully departed this life at CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital In Beaumont, Texas, at age 90.

A native of New Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Genevieve was born on January 2, 1930.

She was the oldest of twelve children born to the late Wilson, Sr. and Mary Jones.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age, and was baptized by the late Rev. Branch Polk at Mount Zion Baptist Church #2 in Loreauville, LA.

She was blessed with five loving daughters, Leanna (deceased), Georgia, Virginia, Cynthia, and Sarah.

Moving to Port Arthur, she became a faithful member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. S. Shepherd.

Her church membership was constant and she later became a member of Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Glen E. Holmes, Pastor.

Sis. “Gene” John loved Jesus, loved her pastor(s), and loved her church.

Attending church faithfully throughout her life, she was a member of her church Women’s Mission Society, and Senior Usher Board until her health started to fail.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband Junious John; parents, Wilson, Sr., and Mary Jones; daughter, Leanna Gilliam; three sisters, Virginia Jones, Harriet Polidore, Betty Haynes; and one Brother, Louis “Pop” Jones.

Mrs. John’s survivors include four daughters, Georgia Fields of Goldsboro, NC, Virginia Gilliam of Port Arthur, TX, Cynthia Stevens (Dale) of Beaumont, TX, and Sarah Frand (Clifford) of Magnolia, TX; two sisters, Julia Samuels (Herman) and Helen Pete both of Port Arthur, TX; five brothers, Wilson Jones, Jr. of Lake Charles, LA, Bishop A.J. Jones (Gloria) of Beaumont, TX, Rev. Sylvester Jones, Felix Jones, Sr., and city Councilman Cal Jones, Sr., all of Port Arthur, TX.

Genevieve is also survived by nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
