NEDERLAND — Janna Bartz is in the business of coffee. She found her love for the caffeinated beverage around the same time many young adults do — in college.

“Originally, when I was in college, I spent a lot of time at coffee shops around town,” she said. “That’s where I got the desire to open a coffee shop. I really liked the environment. I became friends with the different baristas that worked there and it was always a good place to meet new people.”

Bartz was studying for a business degree at Lamar University when the idea of running her own coffee shop emerged.

“I actually started off drinking the frappés and the iced coffees and it wasn’t until later on when I started to get into the industry that I started drinking the hot coffee,” she said, ironically. “I loved that and decided it was what I wanted to pursue.”

Bartz studied in the industry for three years, learning under the tutelage of local coffee shop owners, such as the Groves Café, and attending coffee conferences in places like Seattle and Portland.

In December, a friend of Bartz shared a post with her on Facebook that Charm + Co. was looking for someone interested in opening a coffee shop on Boston Avenue.

She took the leap, opening “The Golden Cup” coffee shop at 1336 Boston Ave.

“I decided to go ahead and jump,” she said. “I decided this was a good location and I was ready for that next step.”

Bartz said the “The Golden Cup” name and black and gold logo colors are a tribute to her hometown and Nederland ISD.

The Golden Cup also sells kid-friendly drinks such as smoothies and Italian sodas.

“This is Nederland,” she said. “We have so much history on Boston Avenue and I wanted to show that I am proud to be from this town.”

The Golden Cup currently serves 22 flavors, available iced, frozen or hot. The shop also serves tea, smoothies, hot chocolate, Italian soda and more.

Bartz is also currently in the works with new Charm + Co. owner Andrea Bryan to bring specialty sip and shop events to the store.

Ideas include events similar to “Painting with a Twist” and party themes like “Mascara and Mocha.”

The shop’s grand opening is at 10 a.m. Monday with a ribbon cutting by the Nederland Chamber of Commerce, free drip coffee and snacks.

“I want to invite everyone to come out, bring their family, bring their friends and come get a good cup of coffee, smoothie or whatever suits you, and celebrate Nederland,” Bartz said.
