Witnesses who saw a man steal a cell phone from a woman’s purse and assault a second woman trying to help were able to block his vehicle in until law enforcement arrived, according to police.
The crime happened at 1:07 p.m. Saturday inside H-E-B, 4800 FM 365, Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso said.
Police believe a man took a cell phone from a woman’s purse in a shopping basket and ran. A woman saw this happen and tried to stop him and he shoved her to the ground.
Neither of the women knew each other and neither suffered injuries during the crime, according to authorities.
Duriso said several witnesses blocked the man’s vehicle in until police arrived and took a suspect into custody.
Police arrested Jose Luis Martinez, 44, of Port Arthur. Bond was set at $30,000. He bonded out of jail the next day.
