PORT NECHES — The Southeast Texas Alerting Network has issued the following alert asking Port Neches residents to shelter in place until 6 a.m. Thursday morning:

“Due to the current wind conditions and on-going activities at the TPC site, there are elevated levels being measured for 1,3-Butadiene. As a precaution, we are recommending sheltering in place until 6 a.m. in the morning. The situation will be evaluated throughout the night.

Because of the alert, the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District announced it is canceling school for the remainder of the week.
“This will allow the current shelter in place that has been called for an area of Port Neches to come to an end, and provide the district adequate time to retest the air quality in our schools before students and staff return,” a district release said.
Nederland Independent School District announced it would have school as planned on Dec. 5.
