NEDERLAND — Gary Porter puts it bluntly when talking about those who choose to drink too much and get behind the wheel of a vehicle.
“That is who is out there killing people, drunk drivers,” the Nederland police chief said this week.
Prevention ends up being key for law enforcement, with trained officers looking to spot the slightest signs of impairment in an effort to head off more tragic consequences.
Two of the best in the Nederland Police Department are Sgt. Chase Romero and Officer Ryan Perriraz, recognized this month as “Heroes of the Highway” for their outstanding work in DWI enforcement by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Porter said NPD statistics indicated Romero and Perriraz made the most DWI arrests in the department.
“They are not just out there looking for DWIs all the time,” Porter said. “They are out there doing their jobs and that is part of it.”
