NEDERLAND — The Nederland City Council said no to a private poker club Monday afternoon.

Coming via a unanimous vote, the Council denied a request from the proprietors of Texas Poker Club in Beaumont to operate a similar location in Nederland.

The poker club needed the Council to grant it a Specific Use Permit because Nederland ordinances do not list poker clubs as an approved business model within city limits.

Monday’s vote was expected following a similar recommendation Oct. 15 from the city’s planning and zoning commission. A vocal group of local residents also expressed numerous concerns about the proposed business during a public hearing at town hall on Oct. 14.

City Manager Christopher Duque recommended denying the request before the Council took its vote Monday.

Following the vote, Mayor Don Albanese asked if anyone from the poker club was in attendance. No one responded.

Texas Poker Club had requested operation at 3503 Nederland Avenue, near 35th Street neighborhood residents.
